WOVEN vs EMBROIDERED PATCHES
Embroidered Patches are patches which design is achieved by interlacing threads. There is a distinct difference in the looks of an embroidered patch to a woven patch:
- The weave of a woven patch is a created with a much thinner thread, just like a woven label.
- The thinner threads enable a tighter weave so there can be more detail in the artwork.
- The threads also provide cleaner lines and a flatter appearance, closer to a printed look.
- The thickness of the patch is also more streamlined and thin.
Because an embroidered patch is stitched more densely with a heavier embroidery thread, the threads make the patch feel thicker also gives off a certain lift and three dimensional look.
This is a great option if you don’t have a lot of text or detail on your patch and would like the overall classic look of an embroidered patch.
With a woven patch, thanks to the material and production process, a patch can be made in much smaller size without losing integrity, even down to 2cm.
Unlike an embroidered patch, woven patches can go on the inside or outside of clothing without a bulky feeling. Thinner threads make Woven patches thinner them embroidered patches, providing a level of flexibility that makes the patch more versatile.
Our patches are made from continuously stitched threads that are intricately incorporated on top of a fabric backing. These threads are tightly woven together to create a seamless image or logo. On the side of the fabric opposite the thread is an adhesive backing or a Velcro strip.
A Merrow border is a heavier border which is sewed up and over the exterior edges of your patch. It is most generally located on shapes, for example circles, ovals and squares.
Merrow edge borders are machine sewn-on edge since the borders are implemented after the design is stitched onto your patches.
Most customers want their embroidered patches to be finished with merrow/overlock border.
A Hot Cut border is a simple, thinner, flatter border that is removed using a hot knife that seals the peripheral edge of your patch, shielding the thread from fraying.
Hot Cut border is laser-cut for precision and allows for nearly limitless design possibilities.
HOOK AND LOOP
Hard hook & loop patch backings are often used for military patches and are popular among law enforcement branches.
The backing is composed of tiny hooks and loops (much like the rough side of velcro) that allow you to attach the patch to a soft backing for a secure connection.
Iron-on backings are a special type of backing that when heated, will form a bond between the patch and the fabric.
Despite what many think, these patches can’t be attached with a simple home iron. Instead, they need the proper amount of time, pressure, and temperature to seal correctly.
This can be done using a heat seal machine, which can be found at most local sporting goods stores.
